We all know the results we can get from physical training when it comes to our bodies but exercise benefits the mind as well. This week we are going to discuss the positive effects that exercise can have on cognitive function.  According to Branfacts.com there are important benfits to be derived from exercise. We will summarize there for you here.

Brain cells. Results from an experiment on mice demonstrated that exercise promotes the generation of new brain cells in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory.

Learning Faster. Another experiment, this one on monkeys, showed that monkeys who ran the amount recommended for middle-aged people learned new material faster than sedentary monkeys. Other fields of cognitive activity that were affected were alertness, attentiveness and again, learning faster.

Healthy ageing. As a person ages, their brain begins to shrink, with the hippocampus losing one to two percent annually. Studies on aging tried to see whether cardiovascular exercise had different results than balance training. The results showed that the walking regimen (cardio) showed an increase in the hippocampus of 2 percent while the balance program demonstrated a 1 percent decrease.

The results are in and exercise is good for your brain. It is never too early or too late to start. here at Method Athlete we are committed to your health and while we concentrate on the body the evidence is clear that physical exercise has a holistic benefit on your body and mind.
